Mario Del Pino, MD
Dr Mario del Pino is board certified in General Surgery and is fellowship trained in Minimally Invasive Surgery. He has been practicing in the Rio Grande Valley area for more than three years and has credentials to perform the gastric band, the sleeve gastrectomy and the gastric bypass procedures laparoscopically. When asked why he decided to train in Weight Loss Surgery he says: "I believe that among all the surgeries I am trained to do, Weight Loss Surgery can do the most for the health of my patients".
Dr del Pino is originally from Lima, Peru where he ranked among the top three in his class after completing Medical School at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in 1996. After graduating, he was assigned to work in a small Peruvian town as a rural primary care physician for one year. He decided to continue his career in the United States and in 1997 he was accepted for General Surgery Residency and completed six years of training in Philadelphia in 2003. He also completed fellowship training in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Thoracic Surgery Department in the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2004. His fellowship included six months of exclusive Weight Loss Surgery training to meet his interest in Bariatrics. Dr del Pino has published book chapters, articles in medical journals and presented abstracts of his work at national meetings. He has privileges to perform LAP-BAND ® and lap sleeve gastrectomies at Mission Regional Hospital. He also has privileges to gastric bands and gastric bypass at Rio Grande Regional Hospital (RGRH). Medicare only covers the LAP-BAND ® and the Lap Gastric Bypass at accredited Centers of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery. In the Rio Grande Valley, RGRH is the only institution with this accreditation.
